A Husband Cooks

Two husbands, actually. Not both mine, of course.

Charlie had lunch with his youngest brother Thursday. Morris has gotten into cooking since his retirement, and is, according to those who’ve eaten his meals, very good at it. Thursday, he gave Charlie a butter bean soup that Charlie raved about.

Morris promised to give me the recipe on Thanksgiving, but Charlie made some of his own for us yesterday and it was very good, whether it was just like Morris’ or not. I know for a fact it wasn’t just like Morris’, because Charlie put some fresh kale in ours. Here’s Charlie’s version:

CHARLIE’S BUTTER BEAN SOUP

Cook until potatoes and carrots are tender, about 20 minutes. Mish the butter beans up a little. Serve with cornbread.

Soup really hits the spot on a cold day, so it was much appreciated.

WRITING PROMPT: Does your main character like to cook? Does he/she cook, whether he/she likes to or not? Does he/she cook by the book or by the seat of his/her apron? Write a scene where he/she has to do the opposite. How does it make him/her feel?

My MC cooks, but doesn’t necessarily like it. She is a puritan, but only because her family has to blend in to cover up the fact that their witches. She’s strong and independent and only does things like cooking, cleaning, and such to keep up the image. She’s 17, afterall, and has better things to do with her time. Like practicing magic and trying to save Salem! Thanks for your post!

Heather, I LOVE your characters! What a wonderful concept! Is this a WIP, or is it in submission, or has it been published?

Monti, has your husband had bits of kale in soup? If he’s only had kale from cans, maybe he doesn’t know how good fresh kale is. If he just really really doesn’t like it, you could break it into largish pieces instead of chopping it fine, and he can give all his kale to you! 🙂
