I Can Haz Earworm?

Mom and I went to see Carmen a week or so ago and a bit I had never paid much attention to before got stuck in my head. I’m going to pass it on before I’m reduced to singing my two go-to earworm replacements.

The only video I could find of it is this wonderful silent film with music over it. Remember Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard? “We had faces then.”

You’re welcome.

That’s funny. I also saw Carmen recently, and the version I saw was a throwback to the original with some spoken dialogue. I love the music, but this particular bit had never stuck in my mind before . . . until now. 🙂

The one WE saw was like that, too! I think the reason it stuck with me this time was that Carmen sang it unaccompanied, except when the trumpet call comes from outside. It was very intimate, just Carmen and Don Jose, with her dancing and singing just for him.

Sigh. I got to see a lovely production of Carmen by the Ky Opera with comp seating in the special box seats. It was my first live Carmen, and, well, it was great! I think A) opera is best seen live so that the element of a show is there to help one with the, er, problems some have with opera in general, and B) Carmen is one of the few operas with a straight-out story that covers a reasonable time-span. And stop giving me ear-worms!
