Lonnie Carter, one of the title characters of “Lonnie, Me and the Hound of Hell”, agreed to be interviewed here today, but he overslept. His wife, Leola, isn’t awake yet, and he says he doesn’t know how to turn her computer on. So he’ll be joining us by text on his smartphone.
MA: Good morning, Lonnie.
LC: gd mrng. cofffee.
MA: What about coffee? …
Apparently, Lonnie has gone to get some coffee, which he doesn’t seem to think he can do at the same time he responds to questions. So please allow me to take this time while we’re waiting to tell you that “Lonnie, Me and the Hound of Hell” is the title story of the collection by the same name. Only the one story is about Lonnie, thank God. The others are about other people and other animals. A second Lonnie story, “Lonnie, Me and the Battle of St. Crispin’s Day”, is due out this year in the Southern Indiana Writers’ anthology HOLIDAY BIZARRE.
LC: love coofee
MA: Ah, you’re back, and I think you’re saying that you love coffee.
LC: mmmmmm
MA: Lonnie, tell us how you and Tiny, the “me” in your titles, met.
LC: same nabrhd. he ws a ltl sqrt. i tk cr of him.
MA: You grew up in the same neighborhood. When you were both very young, Tiny really was tiny, and you took care of him. Now he’s huge, right?
LC: yes
MA: So did you leave school one spring with you big and him little, and come back in the fall the other way around?
LC: yes
MA: …I’ll bet there’s a funny story there.
LC: yes ha ha
MA: …Would you like to tell it to us?
LC: tny wll
MA: Tiny will tell that story?
LC: yes ha ha
MA: …Well, it’s been wonderful interviewing you, Lonnie. Gosh, I’m glad we had this chance to talk.
LC: ok bye
~sigh~ Maybe I should have interviewed Tiny. Or Leola. Or the dog. Or the smartphone. Or a rock.
