A DEAD GUY AT THE SUMMERHOUSE excerpt
by Marian Allen

summerhouseA woman shrank from my gaze, trying to pull back into the shadows of the trees. Tears ran down her calm, pale face. Corrie held her arm, urging her into the clearing.

“I want to go back to the house,” the woman said.

Corrie all but pushed her into the open.

The woman was even smaller than Corrie, though she looked a tad bit older – maybe close to thirty. Her old-lady clothes didn’t look natural on her: a plaid housedress and a fuzzy green sweater. Long-term residential patient, was the term that came to mind.

“There he is,” Corrie said, in a stage whisper. “What did I tell you?”

That made me madder than I believe I’d ever been up to then. I went over and plucked Corrie’s hand off the woman’s arm and inserted myself between them, facing the weeping woman. Poor little kid. Ten years older than me, but she was hurt and she was helpless; I was here, and she was one of “my” kids.

“I’m James Michener Franklin, from down at the Refuge. You must be Miss Eleanor.”

She looked up at me and said, “Albert?” Oh, dear God, not another one….

A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: Is your main character a protective type? Is there anyone or any sort that they’re particularly protective of?
