I was rooting around in my computer and found this picture, which I thought I had lost. It’s a tarted up photograph of the peach tree Katya fell out of when she came to us. Everybody should have a kitten tree, from which a cute little kitten falls whenever you need one.
The tree is gone, now, cut down because it only served as a feast for wasps and yellowjackets.
The flowers are gone, mowed down because they were too hard to keep weeded.
The pear tree is gone, because it never bore.
The playhouse is still there, but the child it was built for is gone, grown into a wonderful woman.
And Katya is gone, off at that Rainbow Bridge, hissing at the other animals and waiting for me to show up so she can pretend she doesn’t care.
How melancholy I am today! Lucky for me it’s Southern Indiana Writers meeting this evening, and I’ll probably meet some of the gang early at Point Blank, where I can drown my melancholy in a pint of good stout. Cheers!
A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: What cheers you up when you feel melancholy?

October 9, 2014 at 8:41amStrangely, being more melancholy helps when I am melancholy. And writing through it. I always write better when a bit sad. I love the idea of a kitten tree. My mom refuses to cut down a messy apricot tree because it was the way her dearest cat used to get onto the roof which he loved to do.

October 9, 2014 at 8:48amTara, that’s so sweet, about the apricot tree! My husband is the dearest man on earth, but I’m forced to say he’s about as sentimental as a hog. That apricot tree would have gotten the ax, cat or no cat.
I agree about melancholy. Unlike depression, melancholy has love and beauty mixed into it, and the best way to deal with it is to explore it until the love and beauty make me happy again. Thank you so much for visiting! HUGS
