The Dragon of Sullivan Hall #SampleSunday

“The Dragon of Sullivan Hall” is a short story of mine that appears in Unseen Press’ DRAGONTHOLOGY, an anthology of dragon stories. I decided to share some excerpts from that today, because one of my former roommates, Debbie Leuders, sent me some photos from back in the day, including a very special and pertinent one.

“The Dragon of Sullivan Hall”

— an excerpt by Marian Allen

To be specific, it takes place in a dormitory of Eastern Kentucky University, and it takes place there and then because of the arrival of a certain freshman–or, if you will, freshwoman.

In 1968, the campus was graced by the presence of one Kerry Cecilia Cunningham. Kerry Cecilia was the first of her line to go to college, where she planned to study to be a teacher. The dormitory she chose to stay in was, of course, Sullivan Hall.

Kerry’s transom opened with the suddenness of an arrow to the heart. Kerry’s voice shouted, “Now,” and Kerry’s shower pail emptied its load of water onto Neef’s head. A pail full of water, compliments of Debbie Oshiro, followed. The steam that arose startled the girls, but struck them as entirely satisfactory.

Neef backed away from the deluge. The transom on the other side of the hall opened, and two buckets of water caught her from behind.

As Neef ran for the stairs, all the transoms opened, and double pails of water struck her from both sides as she passed each pair of doors.

“Oh,” I hear you say, “what an imagination! Real girls would never do such a thing!”

    Whew!
    Flashback City!

Remember when Me and Linda wound up at a former Men’s Dorm, because the Lottery had started and there was a sudden dearth of men going to school to delay the draft??

The closets were designed for hanging suitcoats and pants on a hanger. I was the only one whose clothing fit in such a short space (because of my being so vertically challenged). And the mirror atop the very tall dressers was totally out of view for me.

And, well, other things happened, too, but nothing like the Horror of Terrible Hall, with the chick who had a warrant out against her for messing with the cops, and the jamming of toothpaste into locks and the threats and the loud music wars (won by the playing of bagpipe music by us). And those were the tame old days!
