Lucky McStubbs #animals #squirrel

Mom has a new squirrel visiting her feeding porch. Well, we don’t know that it’s a new squirrel, but it’s newly recognizable.

LuckyDude is missing a tail. He has less of a tail than Squirrel Nutkin, and that’s pretty stubby. But we suspect that, like Squirrel Nutkin, he had a lucky escape from a predator. So, of course, I call him Lucky McStubbs.

When I told Charlie I’d seen a squirrel with a stub of a tail, he said, “Are you sure it wasn’t a chipmunk?” I’m like, “I know a chipmunk when I see one.”

Lucky2I’m not sure he completely believed me until he saw it himself. We see the little guy every day. I’m delighted to report that the other squirrels treat him like it ain’t no thang. Why can’t we be as sensible as squirrels?

It’s Tuesday, so I’m posting at Fatal Foodies, on the topic of happy leftovers.

We’ve got new squirrels here, too. They’ve got slightly smaller, fresh little faces, and they just love getting into everything. On one of the bitterest mornings a few weeks ago, I saw them out in the bright sun playing follow the leader through the tops of some really tall trees, just flinging themselves about with true abandon.
Did I mention I just love watching squirrels?

I don’t know how the Brave Squirrel McStubbins is going to do his tree hopping without his rudder, but i’m certain he’ll figure a way out.
The question is: Do you suppose he learned anything from his close shave?
    A: He’s a squirrel. Maybe not.

    Say HI to your Mom!

I haven’t seen McStubbs trying to tree hop. He climbs okay. I think we must have first seen him right after the … incident: I saw this squirrel commando-crawling over the snow on the deck, sliding along against the surface, like his legs wouldn’t hold him up. When he got to the bird seed, he sat up and ate just like any other squirrel, and that’s when I realized he didn’t have a tail. But after that day, he squirreled across the snow just like everybody else. We shall be following his career with interest.

Glad to hear Lucky McStubbs isn’t letting the lack of a tail keep him down! Might even make him harder for the local cats to catch!

Yeah, he’s pretty feisty! That stub has fluffed out — what there is of it. Looks kind of like a rabbit tail, now. lol
