Here’s a bit from THE FALL OF ONAGROS, Book 1 of Sage. Devona is talking to her foster daughter, Elsie, about Devona’s husband, Darcy.
Why Not Ask?

Devona took Elsie’s hands in hers. “I know very little more than you do. Enough to know that the less you know the better for you. Say nothing to Darcy.”
“Does he know?”
“I think he knows more than I.”
“Don’t you ever speak to each other? Really speak?”
“Not anymore.” The girl’s right to be frightened of marriage. She sees how it can be when two people bury themselves alive with a dead commitment.
“I’m going to ask him,” Elsie said.
“No! Please, you mustn’t. Say nothing to anyone.”
“Does this marriage depend on my keeping quiet?”
“I don’t know…. I don’t know what depends on it.” Devona stroked Elsie’s hair, touched the dear face. “Probably nothing. Darcy probably wants you to forget the past to save yourself the pain of some loss. Your mother’s death from illness, I used to think.”
“Yes….” Elsie smiled a little, and kissed Devona’s palm. “Do you think the Kinninger knows? Don’t you think he should?”
“Suppose I ask your father. I’ll tell you what I learn and we’ll decide together what you should do.”
Elsie considered this, and agreed.
