Falling Off The Turnip Truck And Landing On A Fish #food #fish

Charlie and I are pescatarian. No, that’s not an obscure branch of Protestantism, it’s a dietary label. It means we eat fish. Well, actually, I guess we’re ovo-lacto-pesca-sausagetarians. But the sausage has to be local but not from pigs we know personally.

Me, I’m also a pretty-much-whatever-you-put-in-front-of-metarian, but I cook clean at home.

ANYWAY, this is what we had for supper last night.

fishcornThat’s bi-color corn and broiled tilapia. I dredged it in butter and sprinkled it with parsley, celery flakes, and seasoned bread crumbs, topped it with MOAR BUTTER (okay, vegan margarine, but whatever), and broiled it for ten minutes.

It was perfect — melt-in-your-mouth perfect.

For those who keep track of such things, Charlie and I split one fillet between us and that was plenty.

We also had a salad of sliced cucumbers, feta cheese, chopped mint, vinegar and olive oil, and a little salt.

And now, for your listening pleasure, three other women who love fish.

You’re welcome.

I guess I’m the omnivore hold-out in a world of specialty eaters, but this does look good. I love corn and I like talapi. Still no ‘like’ button 🙁

If we were having a beer (those who don’t recognize that, need to read Dan’s wonderful blog) I would tell you that, while I’m aware there’s a certain hipsterishness about “specialty eating” (LOVE the phrase!), some restrictions may apply.

I would tell you that our #2 Daughter is vegan because of a genuine, if unusually strong, empathy for animals. She volunteers at the zoo, takes in and responsibly cares for stray cats, and has chickens she treats more like pets than employees.

I would tell you that Charlie is practically vegan because he read Jonathan Safran Foer’s EATING ANIMALS and it turned him off meat and dairy (mostly) (me, too, mostly).

I’d say, “Sure, thanks!” when you offered to buy me another Java Stout and would offer you some of my loaded fries. Not my bacon pizza, though. Hands off!

Then I’d tell you about my friend whose joints swell up if she eats gluten, and my friend who breaks out in hives if she eats dairy.

You’d say, “Yeah, yeah, you made your point. And you’re a specialty eater because why?”

And I’d tell you I’m not a specialty eater, I’m a specialty cooker. I like the challenge of making food that looks and tastes good that various friends and relations could also eat.

I would also tell you that I do not know where that damn ‘like’ button has gone off to. I’m thinking of putting an ad in the newspaper: “Come back. All is forgiven.”

That’s a very good thing to want to be able to do. My daughter is a vegetarian and my wife observes religious fasts that are akin to vegan, so I sometimes send them links to these recipes and stories.

In addition to the ‘Like’ button, the “Dan would like to share” option is gone for me 🙁

So, I’ll paste in the link you referenced – http://nofacilities.com/2015/05/29/fast-pitches-and-bad-music/
