Sleeping On The Cold Stone Floor #ThrowbackThursday

Or, Going Medieval On My Ass

Literally.

Back in April of 2014, I attended an honor society induction for our #4 Daughter, the fabulous Sara Marian. It was held in The Red Barn on the University of Louisville Belknap Campus.

RedBarnExtMany — oh, MANY — years ago, I belonged to The Barony of the Flame in The Middle Kingdom of the Society for Creative Anachronism (Maude McEwan, Poet Lady). The Flame held most of its events at that time in The Red Barn, which was then off-campus.

Here’s the interior:RedBarnIntSee that man in the foreground? That’s Charlie, my ever-lovin’ husband. Now, see that really bright, almost rectangular patch of light? Right about there is pretty much where I slept during events. On, like, blankets and stuff, but still.

Good times.

A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: Write about a time when a character slept uncomfortably but happily.

I am shocked SHOCKED to learn the Red Barn is still there!!

Using the Red Barn was part of a complicated strategy to keep it all in one place.

First, we made ourselves a Free University class. UofL would then grant your class a meeting place. Get the drift?

So we utilized the Red Barn, which had, OH GLORY restrooms!, a roof! HEAT! WATER! Rafters from which to hang candlelit chandeliers. Brick walls from which to hang one’s banner.

Plenty of room for Red Rover. (Banned finally from Middle Kingdom functions due to the higher incidence of injury than on the field of combat–my bad!)

Room for the Feast! Tables and chairs from UofL. LARGE pot and pans, ditto.

ANd then there was, of course, the sleeping on the concrete.
    Good times.

Ah, it all comes clear now, Jane. Yes, you did more damage in Red Rover than any number of knights in melee. heh
