In our local weekly paper, we have a feature called Live Wire. People are encouraged to call in and leave brief messages, which are sometimes printed in the Live Wire column.
I seldom read them, but Charlie does, and he pointed a couple out to me this week because he knows my love of the vernacular — “the plain variety of language in everyday use by ordinary people.”
A couple of them sounded like poetry to me, so I hereby present one, formatted as a poem.
I Saw You Little Monsters
by Anonymous Caller
I saw you little monsters
out last night,
and it’s not even Halloween;
it was real early.
You went and toilet-papered
that old lady’s house
right there on the corner
of Lord and Williar.
I saw you dump the trash cans,
spread the trash
and let the animals loose.
Now listen here, buddy boy;
you and that girl
and everybody else in your group,
if I catch you
around my place doing that,
…there are ways
for us to get pictures of you
doing what you’re doing
and a couple of you
are likely to wind up
with a black eye
because I’ve got a whole heap
of rotten tomatoes
sitting here by the front and back door
and, believe me,
I know how to pitch
… then I’ll call the cops …

I love this poem SO HARD!
So, anyway.
I’m posting today at Fatal Foodies about colcannon … or is it KALEcannon?
A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: What would your main character do if they spotted some teens making mischief?

November 10, 2015 at 8:28amSame guy who wouldn’t let us cut through his yard on the way to school in the 50s. He’s timeless.

It’s Tom Waits: “What’s he Building in There?”
I, too, really like that poem of yours, Marian.
