A week ago Sunday, our girls gave Mom a floral cake for her birthday. Today, she said, “That cake is looking kind of tired. I hate to see it go, though.”
So, before she got up, I did this.
The “cake” was made of a cylinder of floral foam, so I cut a slice off the bottom, put it into one of those flat-bottomed soup dishes, watered it, and stuck the unwilted blooms into it. That should last for a few more days.
The baby’s breath and little rosebuds were drying beautifully, and so were some of the pinky things. The big rose was starting to brown, because it was too big to dry. So I pulled out the core and pinched off the brown bits and spread the petals. I pulled the petals off the half-wilted daisies and broke the stems off the centers. Now I have this.
That’s gonna be a big bowl of potpourri, kids! And that will last forever. 🙂

January 26, 2016 at 7:04amIt might last forever in your house. Babies Breath has long been a favorite of our cats. They pop the little “babies” off like those sugar beads we used to get on wax paprer. We end up with bare sticks and, a few hours later, cat puke.

I think it’s great your mom lives so close to you. My mom retired about two years ago. She got a new boyfriend last year, moved in with him and then he sold his house and they moved five hours away. She’s like a giddy teenager with money and a new boyfriend.

January 26, 2016 at 4:42pmYour mom sounds like a blast! And I do appreciate Mom living right here. When she was active, it made it easy for us to do things together. Now that she needs a bit of tending to, it makes it easy for me to keep an eye on her while she maintains some independence.
