Aw, she looks so sad in that last photo. They mold if they get wet? What do they do in the wild?

In the wild, they live in the Andes, where it’s cold and dry. They can get a little wet, because their fur is so thick it’s hard for water to penetrate far in, but that means that any water that does penetrate doesn’t evaporate. In the wild, they either avoid excess moisture or they die. They take dust baths in volcanic ash in the wild and if you’re a good chinchilla “parent”.

She was VERY sad and cross to be without her Momma and her regular routine and regular things. She likes me, but she’s as much of a homebody as I am.

    Little tyrant!
I once saw a small cat fall into the swimming pool and literally claw across the surface of the water to leap out AND NOT GET WET AT ALL!

My boy Rory was a yak-haired cat, and he HATED getting wet. He was all, “Don’t get me near that sink, woman!”

And then there was Tootsie. Tootsie, upon being moved into the new apartment, sat beneath the sofa and sustained a low, pulsing growl for HOURS! Ah, it was magical…..

Oh, my dear lord, how well I remember that growl of Tootsie’s! I might have tried bathing Tootsie, if a qualified vet assured me she had been dead for a couple of years. Otherwise, no.

That’s amazing about the cat and the swimming pool. I totally would have named that sucker Jesus.

        Totally Jesus!

Tootsie…. Well, perhaps if she was muzzled, as well. Otherwise, the dirt nap.

I knew we were copacetic! You are the only other person with a chinchilla that I know.

I inherited Gizzy when my son and girlfriend at the time moved to Houston and were afraid to take her there in case the AC failed.

She has the entire spare bedroom, and lives mostly in a box under the bed, with another for her dust bath, and plenty of things up and down to climb and jump on. She is a gas on stairs.

Wish I had another. But I wish I could some day find her a home with another who knows how spoiled the little furballs are! Gizzy is grey, and does a short list of tricks in exchange for her treats – and loves eating a few blades of wheat grass I grow for her and chomps on my spider plant, apparently without any harm to self.

Dasha belongs to our youngest daughter. We were just chinch-sitting while she and her SO were away for the weekend. I’ll have to tell Sara about Gizzy’s tricks! I think Dasha could learn tricks — she’s tricksy enough!
