Zuzu’s One-Stop Petals #FridayRecommends

Friday RecommendsI’m still on Facebook hiatus, because I’m still refereeing an all-out, no-holds-barred battle between my medication and reality-based depression, so I haven’t been click-baited to many cool sites this week.

Fortunately, there’s Sezin Koehler. I’ve been crossing interweb paths with Sezin for many years, but we didn’t start interacting until Pinterest. She was posting pictures to aid her in writing American Monsters, and we both lamented the fact that Pinterest (at that time) didn’t have private boards. People were sharing her wonderful pins, which meant they were sharing her story notes, too.

Now we’re Facebook friends and Instagram followers and probably Twitter and G+, too, but she has MANY connections, so we don’t interact much. I just sort of trail around and see what she’s up to. It’s hard to keep up!

Oh! We traded books at one point: I sent her the SAGE trilogy and she sent me American Monsters. It’s very intense, so I’m working my way through it as I can. She also sent me this artwork (she’s a fan of — among other amazing women — Frida Kahlo).

FridaSo Sezin has a blog — still Zuzu’s Petals, after all these years. Still unbelievably rich. For instance, she did a post on being willfully childless that went viral. That isn’t the only one that did, but I appreciated it because #4 Daughter has chosen that path. And she did this one on how to behave around heavily tattooed people. It doesn’t mention #9: Don’t act like they’re going to murder you, just because they have tattoos. Maybe that one only applies for people over a certain age who watched a certain kind of movie in the 50s-70s.

Look at her list of published articles, if you have a couple of days to spare: Your attention will be well rewarded.

Or look at her professional website. She does editing, Spanish translations, social media consulting …. Oh, MANY things!

A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: Write a scene that touches on one of the topics Sezin addresses.

About

I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but now live in the woods in southern Indiana. Though I only write fiction, I love to read non-fiction. The more I learn about this world, the more fantastic I see it is.

American Monsters has caught my eye several times. I’d love to know what you think of it when you’re done.
If she, or you love Frida Kahlo, you should read Barbara Kingsolver’s The Lacuna. 🙂

She thinks her own thoughts, and speaks them even when they might not be popular, even when speaking them hurts her, which is true courage.
