The Windmills of my Mind #notdonquixote

When our cousins came to visit the other day, Cousin Vicki brought and left a package of — guess what? — ALMOND WINDMILL COOKIES!

I found out that these are actually called speculaas, and they’re a Dutch confection, which is appropriate for our family (Leisters and Schroeders), since we were German until WWII, at which time we suddenly became Dutch.

What I remember them from is Kindergarten. Do you?

WindmillCookiesA nickle would buy you two of these babies plus a half-pint of white milk. WOW, seeing these rushed me back to the past so fast it took my breath. Made me remember the time we came in one morning and a cat jumped out of the doll bed and ran out of the room. That was excitement!

I do remember those windmill cookies. And those layer sandwiches with some kind of natural bread instead of white, plus jelly and peanut butter. WAIT!
Ribbon sandwiches! That’s what they were called!
    Did you have those?

Yeah! We had ribbon sammiches! And we had a lettuce leaf with a banana on it and mayonnaise, peanut butter, and brown sugar. Sounds foul, I know, but it’s delish! I make it sometimes for myself, although I eliminate the lettuce leaf.

I’ve never seen those (that I can remember) but I remember those little cartons of milk.

I do not remember having been served cookies…
    I do remember the milk.

BUT what I love about this post is how y’all became Dutch. I lol’d and lol’d, Marian. Ferreals. That line was PRICELESS!
My paternal grandmother’s family was Dutch before the war. I can tell, because every male was called Martin Luther VanThis, Martin Luther VanThat. LOL

Love these cookies! I remember them from kindergarten, too, but because my mother once bought them for me to take when it was my turn to provide the snack. SOOO good!

It’s strange that I liked them so much, since I was one of Those Kids who liked my food bland, and these are filled with spices. Loved ’em, though! Still do, as I discovered when I had them again. 🙂
