Amazon Clips a Doorway to Unicorn History #FridayRecommends

Friday RecommendsI picked up cards for a load of Friday Recommends at the Imaginarium Convention this weekend, but I haven’t had time to get to them yet. Meanwhile, I have these.

Amazon is tightening up — again — on the reviews it will allow. Derek Murphy’s beautiful Creativindie blog tells you why and what to do about it.

If you blog, you want graphics on your post. One place to get some is ClipSafari. It’s fanfreakintastic. Start there, and take your find to Canva or PicMonkey and make you an eyeball-grabbin’ graphic.

I’ve pointed you before to Paul’s Shadow and Substance, where he pays tribute to Rod Serling. I particularly recommend for your consideration his post, A Doorway to Sanity, in which he takes “A Stop at Willoughby” as his text for a meditation on how we can make or break one another little by little every day.

Unicorn for Writers is a beautiful site for useful and reasonably priced author services. It also has pages of links and resources. Sign up for their newsletter. They won’t bombard you, and they point you to some prize places.

Like HistoryGossip, for instance. I am so there.

A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: Invent a piece of history gossip that your character knows personally.

I use getstencil.com, which allows me to make ten easy images/graphics a month for free, and has reasonable plans if I need more.

A few minutes, a download to my computer and an upload to WordPress, and I can use the image.

They have a bunch of images you can use every month for free, so I rarely have to repeat one. But I sometimes have to get a bit creative to use the ones they have – customize with text, font, color – and I have it.

Do they have different free images each month, or the same ten? I think PicMonkey has the same THREE all the time — not very useful!

Different. I have made at least 30 images, and each month’s are different.

I do a quickie: have a thought of what to say, check the images to see which one I might wrangle into a quote backing, work out a few words, put some colorful effects around the text – done!

The images are typically under 1M – plenty of space in my wordpress files.

If you want to use the premade quotes or images you have to pay the premium.

Thanks so much for the recommendation, Marian! I really appreciate the kind words and the fact that you linked to my Willoughby post. I’m particularly proud of that one. Very nice of you to share it.
