Auggie Wren Is My Father Christmas

One of my all-time favorite movies is Smoke, a movie by Wayne Wang and Paul Auster, based on various Paul Auster short stories plus additions. Smoke is a movie about the weight of intangibles, and is packed, front to back, with people telling one another stories, true, false, ambiguous, and self-delusional. It’s brilliant.

Toward the end, Auggie Wren, played by Harvey Keitel (my imaginary rough-looking boyfriend), answers a journalist’s challenge to tell him a Christmas story he can — and will want to — use in a column. Here it is.

The closing credits appear over the same story told in black-and-white silent film as Tom Wait’s “You’re Innocent When You Dream” plays.

Merry Christmas.

I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but now live in the woods in southern Indiana. Though I only write fiction, I love to read non-fiction. The more I learn about this world, the more fantastic I see it is.

I began to recall the scene as I watched it.
