One of my all-time favorite movies is Smoke, a movie by Wayne Wang and Paul Auster, based on various Paul Auster short stories plus additions. Smoke is a movie about the weight of intangibles, and is packed, front to back, with people telling one another stories, true, false, ambiguous, and self-delusional. It’s brilliant.
Toward the end, Auggie Wren, played by Harvey Keitel (my imaginary rough-looking boyfriend), answers a journalist’s challenge to tell him a Christmas story he can — and will want to — use in a column. Here it is.
A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: A character steals something.
