Tuesday is grocery day. A week ago, Charlie and I went to A Big Store in A Big Town, rather than our local Jay C. We found many wonderful things that we can’t get locally. Including RIBENA!!!!
I got hooked on Ribena in 1968, when I was on a school trip to England. We each stayed in the home of a local host family. The mother in my family was jolly and sweet and a virtual chambermaid for the rest of the family. While I was there, I made my own damn bed and helped her with the dishes, ’cause that’s how I was raised.
ANYWAY, every morning, she woke us up by bringing us toast and hot Ribena. Couldn’t break her of that.
For a while, in Louisville, I could get my fix at Stewart’s downtown. Then, not.
And here it was! Of course, I bought a bottle. It cost over $7 (5.24 British pounds), but it’s a concentrate, so it goes a long way. A bonus was, in reading the directions, I learned something! I’m always reading about “lemon squash” in British books, and I was like, “What?” And now I know: “squash” is British for sweetened concentrate, aka syrup or cordial! It’s sweet and strongly flavored, and you dilute it with hot or cold water to make it as sweet/strong as you like.
Another bonus is that this post led me to the Ribena website, where I found a link to this video.

The only thing I can relate that to is my forbidden love of Cheerwine. (Cause not just caffeine and sugar, but also red dye.) You shoulda heard me holler when I found out you can buy it in Indy at Cracker Barrel. Well, you mighta heard me. If you heard that holler, it was me!

December 16, 2017 at 4:43pmI think I saw some of that at Kroger. I’ve heard of it, but never tried it. Such a lovely name for… soda pop?
