Ernest Hemingway Walks Into a Restaurant #DealMeIn2018

My Deal Me In deck turned up hearts this week, so I went to Sue D. Gelber’s website and followed a link to:

Restaurant Reviews by MFA Students

Oh, my dear lord, I love this woman! From just the little lit analysis I did in college, I know the mindset you get into, analyzing everything through the lens of literary composition. And Gelber has famous writers analyzing food through the lens of their own particular styles.

You know one of my mottos: Everything is about writing. In “Restaurant Reviews by MFA Students,” Gelber has taken that stance to a hilariously absurd extreme.

THANK YOU, Jay, for Deal Me In! If not for this short story reading challenge, I would never have discovered Sue D. Gelber, William Trevor, or that I love Chekhov (Anton, not Ensign Pavel; I already knew I loved the latter).

A WRITING PROMPT FROM ME TO YOU: Write a review of a restaurant you love in the manner of a literary review by a writer you love–but your writer loathes your restaurant.

MA
p.s. Bonus points if you know another of my mottoes.

About

I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but now live in the woods in southern Indiana. Though I only write fiction, I love to read non-fiction. The more I learn about this world, the more fantastic I see it is.

This is the kind of critique which gives literary writing a bad name: pretentious and not appropriate to the subject. Funny, but also a bit sad. It shows off the writer’s mastery; I like the writer to be invisible and to bring me into the subject almost without me noticing. Other people have different requirements for what they read.
