Food Aversions #1LinerWeds

We all have foods we abhor or dislike or just prefer not to eat. Sometimes it’s the taste, sometimes it’s the texture, sometimes it’s a memory connected to the food.

I was a very picky eater as a kid. Since I was a kid in the 50s, I spent many an hour sitting at the table in front of cold food which hadn’t appealed to me and wasn’t getting any more appealing with time.

If my grandpa was in the house, that didn’t happen. He would “help me out” at the table by sneaking the foods I didn’t like while Mom pretended not to notice.

BUT ANYWAY, yesterday, Dan commented that he would push lima beans off his plate, and that made me think of a joke my grandpa used to make, substituting whatever food I wasn’t eating. Sometimes it would make me laugh and enable me to take the “just one bite” my mother had retreated to.

So this is for Dan:

There was a little boy who hated lima beans. One day he said,

I’m sure glad I hate lima beans, because if I liked them I’d eat them all the time, and I hate lima beans!

A WRITING PROMPT FROM ME TO YOU: Were you a picky eater as a child? Are you still? If you’re writing fiction, how about your character(s)?

    Thanks You!

I knew I liked your grandpa! I can’t imagine liking lima beans. A while ago, I couldn’t imaging liking chick peas, but I eat them sometimes now. But lima beans are the worst.

So I guess you don’t like succotash, either. Or butterbeans. Now, butterbeans, I would rather leave, although I’ll eat them if they’re put before me. Baby limas, though, I like.

Can’t argue with that logic! What is it about lima beans that brings out the attitude in people?

Poor cookery. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. Listen: I learned how to cook by reading the recipes on the ingredients labels, and I never lost the habit of reading them. This can of baby limas said: Drain the liquid from the can into a saucepan, boil it down to concentrate the liquid, then add the beans just long enough to heat them through. And I’mma tell you what–these babies were STELLAR.
