Stalking the Wild Bookstore

My oldest grandson (nearly 18!?) and I haven’t done anything together for a long time, so today we’re doing something together.

When he was pre-school, we watched him while his mother worked, until she got a job in a daycare where he could spend the day near her. He and I were Lego buddies. We could spend hours rummaging through an old suitcase of random pieces left from when our #4 daughter and I were Lego buddies. Of course, the grandson would build cool stuff and then ask to take it home, and there went our Lego, bit by bit! 😀

When he got older, he would spend the summer days with us while his mother worked. One year, we watched Star Trek movies and made our own tribbles out of fake fur stuffed with kapok, or whatever stuff people use to stuff stuff these days. Another year, we played through the first three Myst computer games. We went to the Speed Art Museum together, where he pleased me very much by being vastly interested in the art AND by refraining from even looking like he was about to touch anything–unlike another child we saw, who had to rub his hands on every statue and painting he approached.

As he’s gotten older, though, he gotten busy with his own friends and his own activities, and we don’t spend much time together. His mother doesn’t need for somebody to watch him any more, and… well, we just don’t do things together. I sometimes drive him to a doctor’s appointment, or see him at family gatherings, or we talk in passing when I’m at his mother’s house or he’s here with her.

But he spent a few days with his Aunt #4 Daughter, and she said he said he’d like to spend some time with me–why he couldn’t tell me that, I don’t know, other than “he’s human–you know how we are”.

So today we’re going to Book Lore, a used book store in a nearby town. We can trade old books for… other old books. Then we’ll have lunch out and then we’ll go to Rainbow Blossom so I can get some crank food healthy food, like vital wheat gluten to make seitan. I don’t have many books I want to get rid of, but I’ve culled a few. My TBR stack is so high now, I surely don’t need any more books, but it makes a nice anchor for a day away with one of my favorite people. 🙂

I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but now live in the woods in southern Indiana. Though I only write fiction, I love to read non-fiction. The more I learn about this world, the more fantastic I see it is.
