Skyblue Pink

pink clouds in a blue skyWhen my late and beloved grandfather was asked to name a color, he would say “skyblue pink”. It turns out the word has been around since before the turn of the 19/20 century (my grandfather was born in 1910), but he most probably picked it up from reading Uncle Wiggily stories to my mother and then to me. I certainly remember his reading Uncle Wiggily to me.

So, when I saw this sky–whenever I see pink and blue blending together like this–I think of my grandfather. Even though he’s gone, now, and we still miss him very much, things that remind me of him make me happy. He was that kind of person.

On a semi-related note, my “v” key is sticking today. Do you think that’s where the poetic abbreviation “ne’er” for “never” came from–their keyboards were sticking? No? Well, I daresay you’re right.

WRITING PROMPT: Have a character use a phrase or word from his or her childhood or picked up during childcare, like a gangster who drops a gun and says, “Oopsie!”

I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but now live in the woods in southern Indiana. Though I only write fiction, I love to read non-fiction. The more I learn about this world, the more fantastic I see it is.

Pretty shot and the color description is perfect for those kinds of skies.

During Christmas dinner, my father told us about his dad and his brothers. We never knew that our granddad wrote too, in the local newspaper! What a pleasant surprise.@Marian Allen
