Snacking Crackers

Today is food day at the dear old blog, and I felt inspired to write a small verse upon the subject of one of my favorite comfort snacks.

BUTTERED CRACKERS
Buttered crackers, thou food of bliss!
What food is gentle and mild as this?
So simple, wholesome and yet so full
Of flavors and textures. Thou hast a pull
Few other snacks can exert. Thou art
A snack to gladden the sourest heart!
The crunch of cracker, the slide of butter–
Thou’rt “quite too all-but”. Thou’rt “jolly utter”.*

*The first person to identify these quotations (they’re from the same place) and posts it here in the Comments wins a PDF download of a short story. One of mine, I’m afraid, but nothing is perfect in this sad old world.

WRITING PROMPT: What does your main character eat as a comfort snack? Write a character who eats something character #1 considers bizarre.

I can’t believe this: I know what my characters actually like to eat!

The character I’m writing now takes a burrito wrapper, slathers it with peanut butter, then rolls it around a peeled banana. He has a serious carb jones.

In my previous book, the grandmother had a motto: “When the going gets tough, the tough order Chinese.”

Mmmm! I love that idea–Imma have that some time! My snack this morning was a banana spread with peanut butter and mayonnaise and liberally sprinkled with brown sugar. They used to give us those in elementary school, and I LOVE it!

I like to know at least what KIND of stuff my characters like to eat: fancy or plain, complicated or simple.

Love the grandmother’s motto. 🙂 Got to get that book! Is this the one that just got picked up by a publisher?

Just wait one minute here… peanut butter and mayonnaise?!? I like the idea of a peanut butter and banana rolled into a tortilla. And like that grandmotherly motto. Which book is this?

Peanut butter and mayonnaise and brown sugar on bananas. It’s heaven!

The banana tortilla and the grandmotherly motto are from books by Sarah E. Glenn. I want to know which ones, too!

I’m not a big snacker, so I probably wouldn’t eat any of the things mentioned. But I was just with a lot of people under four feet tall who would probably love it all!!

    Happy eating!

Cream crackers sound good! I’m a big fan of “whatever floats your boat” snacking, so try whatever comes to hand and see what you like. 🙂
