I wish I had a nickle for every time somebody has said, “Marian, eh? Like the librarian?” I don’t mind the joke, because I love The Music Man, I’d love to look and sing and dance like Shirley Jones, and I wouldn’t mind smooching on Robert Preston, either. I also love books. So I don’t mind, I just wish I had a nickle for every time I heard it.
At one time, I memorized Robert Preston’s “Ya Got Trouble” routine and performed it at amateur theatricals around and about. I know it’s difficult to believe, what with my being so elegant and dignified and all — SHUT UP!
In other news, I just found out my short story collections (except for TURTLE FEATHERS, which is still enrolled in KDP Select but is free there for Select borrowing AND for everybody on Fridays this April) … I lost my place. Oh, yes: MOST of my short story collections are available through iTunes. How cool is that? Way, that’s how! I think I’ve added that link in all the appropriate places on this site. If I’ve missed a place, I’d take it kindly if you let me know.
A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: A character has a name that reminds everybody of something and they always remark on it. How does the character react?

April 16, 2012 at 1:18amHi Marian, love to read this article. I can actually this. I was once like you when someone called me “girl in the mirror”, I confused but I just ignore it.

April 16, 2012 at 9:06amOh, Nicholle, that was so mean! Good for you, to just ignore it. That’s all you can do with mean people. The people who call me Marian the Librarian are just being funny. Most of us are touchy about our own names, but don’t realize that other people might be touchy about theirs. 🙂
I’m actually not touchy about what people CALL me, but I want them to SPELL my name right! Must be a writer thing. I love it that you always spell my name right. Thank you.

April 14, 2012 at 11:41amHi. My name is Jane, and I am a name victim, as well.
“Hello, Jane,” people say. “Where’s Tarzan?” I wish I had a nickel, really I do.

April 14, 2012 at 1:26pmWe could run away and be rich, couldn’t we, if we had all these nickels?

April 14, 2012 at 7:04amMy grandmother Cunningham was named Marian, as well. Did I ever tell you that? So I never say the librarian thing. My mind just says “like Grandma.”

April 14, 2012 at 7:41amI have Cunninghams in my line, too! My grandfather’s grandmother was a Cunningham by birth. So that’s why I love you so much: you’re my granddaughter! 🙂
