Warning! Danger, Will Robinson!

I got a message from my security plug-in yesterday, saying that someone had been prevented from signing in to my blog’s Administration section because they had exceeded the permitted number of tries at my password.

That happens, every so often. What has never happened before was this: THEY HAD MY USER NAME.

passwordMy user name is not Admin, which is what they usually try, and it isn’t my real name. It’s short but odd, and not anything that anyone would come across randomly. I don’t use the same user name or password for any two sites, so I’m not compromised, but I was a bit unnerved.

They weren’t able to guess my password, but I decided not to take any chances, and I changed it, taking it from weak to Strong.

Go thou, and do likewise.

    ARGGH!!
I’m having jousts with Yahoo mail. Here’s my advice:
If you have Yahoo mail, go right now and establish another, current email address (NOT on Yahoo). People online are recommending Outlook mail. Seriously. Update your Yahoo profile by adding this as your alternate email address.
Now: Do not attempt to contact Yahoo about problems with your email. You can’t reach anybody!! NO ONE CAN!
You MAY be able to receive help messages at your OTHER email address, should Yahoo decide to send you a new password or security code. NOTE AGAIN: You will never be able to discuss this with a living human being, so WATCH OUT. You are warned.

Thanks, Jane! I’ve never used Yahoo mail. It’s always been buggy and hackable. Love Groups, but that’s about it.

Marian, that is so creepy! A good reminder to change passwords frequently, which I am always told to do by those who know. (And I guess anything else one can do to confound creeps). I also had a strange thing happen that has never been explained. I hadn’t used my twitter account for a few years, and then went to it to begin using it again. Weirdness: someone was using MY twitter-connected e-mail as their twitter e-mail, and I couldn’t access twitter. All attempts at getting help were met with a circular “solution” requiring the password that they kept saying was incorrect!! My tech friend finally freed up my account with a different e-mail. To this day, in my spam there are always e-mails for this guy who is using my alternate e-mail account as his twitter e-mail. No harm has come from it, and no one can figure it out.

Terry, the internet is a weird place, all right. Lucky for us, we have cats and dogs to navigate it for us! 😀
