White Coats for Corrie

excerpt from A DEAD GUY AT THE SUMMERHOUSE
by Marian Allen

white coatsDr. Andrew sat at the top of the stairs, scribbling something in a small spiral notebook. He looked up as we neared him, a slight frown making his eyes look almost as beady as his old man’s.

“What kept you? Ava had to leave.” He looked at his watch.

“It was Sandy’s fault,” Corrie said. “You know how he talks and talks.”

True enough, but at least the people he talks to are really there. I wasn’t going to rat on the girl, though. I might say something to Aunt Missy later, but no way I was going to tattle to the doctor. Corrie probably had lots of men in clean white coats in her future as it was. He seemed to have his suspicions, anyway:

“Sandy’s fault, was it?” He stood, stuffing his pen and notebook into a pocket of his lab coat. “Ava took tea to Mary and Eleanor. You’ll have to take the sitting room tray.”

“What about you and – and ‘Mitch’?”

“I’ll show him to his room, then take him down to the kitchen.”

No tea in the sitting room for me? Boo-hoo. And I’d been surreptitiously practicing holding my pinkie in a delicate curve.
