Connie’s Colors #SampleSunday

Connie, the main character of SIDESHOW IN THE CENTER RING, has an unfortunate accident and turns a patchwork of all the colors people can be. It attracts the unwanted attention of a sleazeball at a party.

merit badgeHe laughed and put a finger under my chin, lifting my face. I hate it when guys do that.

“You have become a trifle–” he whispered, “–exotic. Exciting. Especially in that charming thing you barely have on.”

“Spreading it a little thick, Darryl,” I said. “You think I don’t know I look like a set of desert camouflage fatigues?”

“Hardly that,” he said. He began touching patches of my skin, murmuring color names as he did.

“Bronze. Umber. Jet. Cinnabar. Ocher. Ivory.”

I brushed his hand away.

“I haven’t finished,” he said.

“Yes, you have.”

He curled the corners of his mouth in what was supposed to be a smile.

“For now,” he said. “You’re right: This is too public–”

He finished the sentence to the air. I walked away.
