Absent and Soon-to-be Absent Friends #tbt

I have a couple of friends who are soon to move away, several friends who have recently passed away, and a couple of friends who are soon to pass away. It makes me kind of sad, although none of them will ever be completely absent from my life.

My grandma and grandpa, for instance, have passed, but they might as well just be in the next room commenting on whatever’s going on in the room I’m in. If the thing I’m cooking doesn’t come out looking like the recipe picture, my grandpa says, “That don’t hurt the eatin’ of it.” If I am not amused by an off-color joke, my grandma laughs until she gets a coughing fit and tells me, “Don’t be such a granny! That was cute!” Yeah, my grandma thought off-color jokes were cute. Mickey Spillane was her favorite writer.

And the people who are moving! I’ll miss you most of all, Scarecrow! Arizona, Louisville, Wisconsin…. The Internet and the phone lines will keep us accessible to each other, but it’s a long way to go for face-to-faces, especially Louisville, as long as the bridge construction keeps traffic a constant snarl. hornetsOh, well, I guess I’m just feeling a little triste this morning.

I can get to where I meet Jane easily; maybe everybody who moves away could meet me at The Irish Rover in Louisville for a big, mildly boozy reunion.

My grandma wasn’t a drinker, but she would get a kick out of that.

A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: Who does your main character miss most, other than close family? Did the person(s) pass away or move away or both?

About

I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but now live in the woods in southern Indiana. Though I only write fiction, I love to read non-fiction. The more I learn about this world, the more fantastic I see it is.

Oh, that’s kind of sad. Sounds like a lot of transition! Have a great little image I peeled from FB the other day. Will share with you later. It fits right in to this!

It’s hard to lose dear friends. The older I get, the more dear ones I hold in my heart, which makes my heart heavier and heavier. It’s one of the many burdens I’ll be glad to lay down when my time comes.
