“The cart must be made of lead. I can pull it no more tonight.”

“What did you bring?”

Andrin repeated the list she had given him.

“And what else?”

For a moment, Andrin honestly couldn’t think of anything else. Then he felt himself flush in the darkness. “And a razor. But that could hardly make a difference.”

“It couldn’t?”

“A little thing like that – how could it?”

“That would be impossible, wouldn’t it?”

Was this a test? “…Yes.”

“Andrin,” said his grandmother’s whispery voice, “you are talking to a dragon.”

After a moment, Andrin stood. “I can’t see.”

Flames unfurled from the dragon’s nostrils, faint and blue but strong enough for Andrin to find his kettle and the unauthorized baggage inside.

“What do I do with it?”

“Let it fall.”

“But my… my hair will grow.” The Waymaster rubbed his scalp, already beginning to itch.

“If you will take what you don’t need, don’t complain of the weight.”

Andrin opened the hand which held Karol’s gift. There was a tiny rustle as it passed into the grass of the roadside.
