VINT #IfWeWereHavingACoffee #ThursdayDoors

If we were having a coffee …. Well, honestly, we’d probably be in my kitchen, because I’m cheap … er … love to host my friends.

BUT IF YOU WERE JANE and we were having a coffee, it would be at VINT Coffee on Frankfort Avenue. When we first started meeting there, it was Java Brewing. Now, it’s VINT, and it’s part of the Heine Brothers group. Yes, my pharmacy is Butt Drugs and I drink coffee at a Heine Brothers location. What’s your point?

I would approach from this angle, most likely, checking out the outdoor tables if the weather is nice, to see if Jane is sitting outside.

VintNope, she isn’t, so I would go in this door.

VintDoorI would stop to read the notices and posters, as if I might actually come over the river and attend anything they advertise.

But I do have many friends in Louisville, so, if there’s anything I think might interest them, I would take a picture of the notice and send it to them, probably on Facebook, because it’s easy and I’m lazy efficient.

There are more posters, notices, and local free publications in the vestibule, so I would stop and check those out, too.

Finally, I would get into the actual coffee house, and there Jane is, waiting for our hello hug.

VintPalDon’t try to take a picture while you’re walking, kids. It’s just a heartbreak waiting to happen.

Jane and I have been friends since the summer between junior high and high school — over 50 years. That’s a while.

What’ll we have?

VintCounterHeine Brothers was established in 1994 by two guys, only one of whom was named Heine. Why they didn’t call it Mays Brothers, I’ll never know. Heine was the bean roaster, so maybe that’s why. In 2002, they became a 100% Fair Trade and Organic coffee roaster. They’re good corporate citizens, good neighbors, activist businessfolks, supporting local events and sponsoring initiatives to help people grow their own and their neighborhoods’ fresh food.

Here’s one of the friendly baristas. We love her. Well, I love her. I can’t speak for Jane. Sometimes she’s kinda sassy, but that cracks me up.

VintBaristaIf we were having a coffee, we would probably get a latte or something else fancy. Because this.

VintArtIt’s New Year’s Eve, so let’s be careful out there.

A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: Two of your characters meet in a coffee house. Is this an appointment for business, pleasure, a combination? Is it a “meet cute”? Is it violent, funny, pleasant, climactic, anti-climactic?

I like stealth pix just fine. It’s made my heart grow huge, watching you come up to the coffee house, spotting me inside. For myself, I’m beaming, and I can see some of it’s spilled over onto my face. This is always a really happy moment. And, you know something? I can still remember the second you came round the side of the house into my backyard with Beth, and we were finally introduced. Like it was yesterday, not fifty-odd years ago.

Happy New Year, my friend. And to all of yours.

Happy New Year to you, too, friend. πŸ™‚ You know, that Lonesome Valley song says, “Ain’t nobody else can walk it for you,” but we’ve walked many a Lonesome Valley WITH each other, haven’t we? Yes, we have. I still have that picture you drew of the character in my short story. πŸ™‚

It really is a joy, janet. Everybody needs at least one friend who knows them at their worst and their best, and believes, despite any evidence to the contrary, that the good outweighs the bad. πŸ™‚ Jane does me that honor. And I KNOW her good outweighs any bad I might be able to ferret out.
