CoryDoors — Rockey’s The Dock #ThursdayDoors

Not a very fancy door today, but one Charlie and I are always eager to walk through.

DockDoorsThe only thing Charlie hates more than eating out is eating out where there are people. We usually get to The Dock (officially, Rockey’s The Dock) before 11:30, when we’re nearly the only ones there. It gets crowded later. Notice there are two doors to accommodate the popularity.

DockWelcomeThe nautical sign says Welcome, and they mean it. Pretty cheesy decor, but the food is good.

DockMenu

Yeah, there’s chicken, but why? The “small” fish sandwich is two big fat pieces. They also have slaw, clams, rolled oysters, and fried just about everything (including cheese and pickles).

DockFreebiesToo hungry to wait? Have a free cookie or peppermint.

This is a truly small-town type of joint. That means that, if you want friendly service, come in with a smile and a friendly attitude. If you come in expecting to be courted, you’re in the wrong place. They don’t have to charm tourists; they have regulars.

This post is part of Norm Frampton’s Thursday Doors link-up. Go on over and see who else has doors on offer; you’ll find them from around the world.

A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: Write about a truly small-town type of joint.

They have oysters? Well, I know where I’m eating next time I’m in Corydon. Thanks for posting.

I love their fish and fried mushrooms. Haven’t had anything but those and the clams, because those are so good, I don’t want to waste the chance to have ’em! I hear the french fries are lackluster, so be aware.

Really nice thought: A great seafood place that you don’t have to worry about. It’s just that good. All the time!

There have always been little places around town here where you could get the best fish ever. But these days….not so many. Ex: The once-a-week Friday fish fry. Gennie’s Diner. Capt’s Quarters (gone commercial). That place on Harrod’s Creek (gone to bikers). That place over on Lexington Road, where you now have to shove aside the blue-haired oldsters to get inside, and once there, have to worry about some customer expiring suddenly at your feet while awaiting their now mediocre, greasy fish! (It’s a Lexington Road fancy place now. Only overdressed aging yuppies.)
    Meeps!

But listen to me: just another aging sort of ex hippie. Able to disguise myself amidst the blue hairs by still having no grey to speak of. Heh. 😉

Mike Lennings? Mom used to swear by that place, but it was not so good the one time I went. Just an off-day, I supposed. I hear Check’s in Germantown is still good. Yeah, I do miss those good West End Catholic fish fries. Best fish ever!

These are the places I always hope to find when I travel, the place where the locals eat. My daughter and I found a restaurant once that was a local fav. When the waitress asked if wanted our leftovers wrapped, I told her we were in a hotel. She asked “how did you find out about us?” as if she wanted to know who had given up the secret 🙂

I like a small, well lit, uncrowded place, too. Fish & Chips and Coleslaw with a bun. I like good portions, good service, and a fair price. I like lots of coffee and a glass of ice water. Lemon merangne pie for dessert.

Looks like a cool place to go for lunch. My hubby and I usually go to cafes at off-times.

Off-times can be problematic, if they aren’t quite ready yet, but it generally beats fighting a crowd. My mother used to favor a place where she lived in upstate New York that was so crowded my Grandpa used to say, “You couldn’t stir ’em with a stick.” She loved crowds, but I prefer the company to be a little thinner. heh

I love eating at little local places whenever we are out and about. We use the YELP app to guide us and have found the best places to eat.

The Yelp entry on Rockey’s is mixed: two entries; the guy from Chicago loved it and the woman from Louisville hated it. Personally, I’d go with the CHICAGO guy’s opinion, yeah?

        @Marian Allen

Enjoy checking it out. If you never tried dessert before, they fed you well. As my brother used to say: Food is the cheapest part of this operation. If you feed them well, they come back. If you don’t they do not return!

I love small town type eating places. Our town is bursting with food trucks these days, too. Very cool link-up idea.

Oh, Patricia, I LOVE food trucks! We don’t have any in Corydon, alas! Sometimes I get to eat at one in Louisville. I love Genius In A Box!

@Marian Allen – There’s a Maine Lobster Shack food truck I’m dying to visit — really good lobster rolls (with butter) in Northern Colorado seems like the best possible treat ever!! It only comes up here about once a week when the weather is fit, so I’m watching their Facebook page for the perfect day when their schedule fits mine.
