If you’re wondering why my site has been unavailable off and on all day, here’s what I’ve been seeing from a WordPress plugin:
This was yesterday. In the chat transcript, by host, Bluehost, who has never notified me of my site’s being down, and whose tech support told me days ago when I first asked what was going on…. Wait, let me begin again.
Days ago, I got in a live chat with tech support to see why my blog was going down repeatedly. “Is it some kind of attack?” I asked. “No, no attack.”
So yesterday, I got on again and got a different tech, who told me the server I share is experiencing a DDoS — a Distributed Denial of Service — attack. They tell me I can minimize this sort of thing if I spring for a dedicated server.
And I’m like: Uh-huh.
So I’ll probably be transferring my site to another host, so I might be gone for a few days. Not sure when this grand move will take place, but I’ll try to get it done before Story-A-Day May.
Meanwhile, I’m posting today at Fatal Foodies about Eggrolls With An Italian Accent.
A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: A character has to move.

February 23, 2016 at 7:32amI administer two WordPress sites. One on Bluehost and one on GoDaddy. Problems on bluehost, always. So far, none on GoDaddy. Your mileage may vary.

February 23, 2016 at 7:53amI’ve never had trouble with Bluehost before, and I’ve heard many complaints about GoDaddy. Now I’m hearing (and experiencing, with Bluehost) the opposite from multiple people. I have some kind of resistance to GoDaddy, but I can’t remember what it stems from, so I need to get over it. I’m thinking about MDDHosting. They have great reviews.

February 23, 2016 at 7:58am@Marian Allen – GoDaddy can be obnoxious with marketing, but they have started to respond to “hey, leave me alone.” they have also scaled back the GoDaddy girls a bit, if that was an issue.

February 23, 2016 at 8:39amWell that’s a bummer. I’m glad you figured out what was wrong. Good luck!

February 23, 2016 at 8:46amNow I need to row whatever ducks need rowing so the transfer will go as seamlessly as possible. Fingers crossed!

February 23, 2016 at 8:40amGood luck with the site.
Great looking food post. Am salivating now.

February 24, 2016 at 1:18amI have a love-hate relationship with Bluehost, but I mostly hate them. I get notices from them about once a year saying I have 7 days to reduce the number of files I have or they will delete my account. I host most of my sites with Hostgator and they aren’t any better, in fact, I think have the same owners.
One of these days I plan on moving all my sites over to BigScoots, I’ve heard nothing but good things about them, and they migrate your sites for free.

February 24, 2016 at 8:03amHere’s a list of the hosting sites owned by the same wonderful folks who bring us Bluehost: https://www.reviewhell.com/blog/endurance-international-group-eig-hosting/ It’s a long one, but BigScoots isn’t one of them, so do think about it. I’ve now gone several hours without any downtime, so I’m marginally less irritated. heh

February 24, 2016 at 9:37amI see Site5 is on the list too. I didn’t know that. Years and years ago I had a few sites hosted at Site5 and I never had any issues ever. I bet things there have gone down hill.
That article confirms my suspicions about Hostgator and bluehost being owned by the same company.
BigScoots here I come! I’ve heard switching to BigScoots really helps with load time lag.
What hosting company are you going to switch to?
Marian Allen
February 24, 2016 at 9:57amMDDHosting has really good reviews, and they’ve been very helpful about the switching process. So I may be offline for a few days while the domain change propagates, because I have my domain name registered at another company — AND IT’S OWNED BY EIG, TOO!
