New Bird In Town #Caturday

Sweetie PieSweetie Pie Turner here, MomGoth’s mom’s cat.

Mom’s cuckoo clock has been grinding down for some time. The cuckoo stopped going all the way in or out years ago, and it never kept the right time. For the past few months, the pendulum just randomly stopped pending — or whatever you call what pendulums do. It finally choked on its own winding chain, and stopped completely.

So MomGoth got on the internet and found a replacement. The picture looked the same, but the clock she got is about half as big as the old one, and it has to be wound every day instead of once a week.

Mom says we’ll get used to it in time.

I took a picture of it for you.

clockThat didn’t come out very well, and everybody freaks out when I get on the table, so I asked MomGoth to take a picture from way up there on those long, funny-shaped hind legs that people balance on.clock2Well, the people are welcome to the silly thing. I’ll just sit by the door and look at real birds, thank you all the same.sweetiepiebirdsA WRITING PROMPT FOR ANIMALS: Are you allowed to get on the table?

We had a cuckoo clock for a while. It didn’t work very well. Of course, I took it apart. I just cleaned it a bit and put a little oil on the things that looked like they could use a little oil. I got it working. Neither the dog nor the cats approved. I think we gave it to a good home.

The Lady Who Obliges by cleaning Mom’s house every other week is interested in the old clock. I have a feeling she’s going to do what you did, which is fine by us. I kind of like the smaller clock.

Dan reminds me of my dad’s story about his first pocket watch.
Dad won a spelling bee, either won the watch OR a dollar with which he bought the watch. He went up into the holler, took it apart, and didn’t come home until he had it back together. Myself, I wonder what tools he took with him.

Dad was a watchmaker for decades, until he retired.

AND I’m told that clock repair is a b14&^h because you always have to make so many of the parts.

Horology is the art of watch repair. Dad would tell us to put ‘horologist’ on the little forms we had to fill out in grade school about what our parents did. You can imagine the blinks and wide eyes that response got us!

LOL! Your dad was a very special person. As Mr. Monk would say, he was a gift … and a curse. Taking the watch apart and not going home until it had it back together — and, I’m willing to bet, working — illustrates the very best he was. An amazing person. You inherited the best of ‘im.

Does the chain reach down as far as the cat needs? It must be a real temptation.

My grandfather’s grandfather clock had the weights inside a glass door.

Sweetie Pie doesn’t seem interested in the chains, unlike in her younger days.

MY grandfather’s grandfather clock, which no longer works, also has its pendulum and weights behind a glass door. It hadn’t worked for years, and Middle Grandson accidentally plowed into it and it started! A week or so later, it stopped again. I asked him if I could throw him up against it and get it going again, but he declined.

Haha, I wonder what photos my pets could take? I bet they’d get really good close-ups of one another.

My FIL has a mild obsession with clocks. They have the loudest, clockiest clocks ever. I’m not much a fan of noisy clocks, no matter how lovely.

Oh, that was my grandpa! He was the clock guy, and Mom keeps them in memory of him. Fortunately for our sanity, most of them have stopped. But she wanted the cuckoo replaced. At one time, they had three striking clocks in the living room, including the cuckoo and the grandfather clock which played the Big Ben thing — DAH duh DAH duh….duh duh DAH duh — and then one in the office which plays a different birdsong every hour. Didn’t bother them, but made it hard for a visitor camping out on the couch.

Exactly. I’m pretty sure my in-laws don’t often hear their clocks.

It looks pretty but doesn’t the sound drive you insane?

You get to where you don’t notice it unless you’re listening for it — or reading aloud or engrossed in a quiet scene on television. In other words, yes, it does. lol

lol – sounds like the rooster my neighbours used to have. Got to the point where I could sleep through the 5am reveille but boy did I notice his absence when they moved. 🙂
