Shelf On Fire and I Don’t Care #FridayRecommends

Friday RecommendsHad a WAY busy day yesterday, so I’m playing catch-up today, so this will be short. — Whaddya mean, “Thank God”? Is that nice? Is it? No, it is not.

ANYWAY, I love the sites that turn up when you type a really specific question into a search engine. I typed, “Can mayonnaise be frozen?” and Shelf Life Advice is what I found. (BTW, the answer is no, so boo hoo.)

I’m one of those bizarros who is as likely as not to buy a book off an author whose blog I love. I already recommended Greg Fallis to you, and now I’m recommending his book of short stories, which I’m currently reading, DOG ON FIRE. There have been no incendiary canines so far, but I doubt my luck will hold.

Really good writing, clean and clear, moving and funny. The two PI partners are distinct in the way real people are distinct, not in the way TV partners are distinct. You know: “This one is blond and married and does things by the book. This one has black hair, is a swingin’ single, and steps over the line to get the job done”. Joop and Sweeney are REAL. DON’T TELL ME THEY’RE JUST MADE UP — THEY’RE REAL!

When I finish this book, I betcha a nickle I buy his novel about the guys.

Oh, and you might like to read his post of August 29th, about some of the things he does and does not care about. I hope I get to meet Mr. Fallis some day and buy him a beer.

A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: Make a list of five things in your character’s contemporary culture that he or she does care about and five things he or she does not care about.

I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but now live in the woods in southern Indiana. Though I only write fiction, I love to read non-fiction. The more I learn about this world, the more fantastic I see it is.
