A couple of months back, Charlie suggested we buy some package mixes for times we need to fix something quick. We chose a wide selection, and most of them have been disappointing.
I didn’t expect much from this, but it did have actual real rice in it. But the rice kind of stuck, and got kind of gummy, and the sauce didn’t thicken much, so it looked kind of like soup.
I put it over shredded lettuce. The yellow blob is called “topping.”
But you know what? It was really flavorful and spicy! The lettuce was so fresh and crunchy and juicy and it set off the spiciness a treat.
So … yeah.
A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: A character expects something to be crap and is pleasantly surprised.

October 19, 2016 at 11:52amOh my, I lived on HH for most of my sophomore year in college. I still like the combinations, although my wife usually makes them as a way to use leftovers. If I were on my own, I’d try it again.

October 19, 2016 at 1:07pmWe do them without the meat, o’ course. I forgot to say that I added Meatless Crumbles and a tablespoon of olive oil to this.

October 19, 2016 at 7:54pmMy bestie made me some Hamburger Helper once, and although I thought it was tasty enough, I suffered horrendous indigestion, so I avoid it now. That being said, I’m glad you enjoyed yours. I’m just gonna stick to my mother’s goulash. 😛

October 20, 2016 at 8:08amFresh-cooked is always best, Joey, especially Mom-cooked. Unless it’s my mom. Then, not so much. She always claimed I taught myself to cook at age 13 out of self-defense. ANYWAY, HH is full of all kinds of chemicals and stuff. I threw the box away, or I’d check it out. How do you deal with MSG? Some people get sick from it. No telling. Yeah, stick with your mother’s goulash. And send some over here, will ya? 😉

October 20, 2016 at 8:58amI don’t know that I’ve ever had noticeable trouble with MSG, but I know I have issues with certain processed foods. I’m delicate. I don’t want to be delicate, but I also don’t want to spend my time chewing Tums, rehydrating, and well, you know. 🙂
My mother’s goulash is delightful comfort food, although I admit, I eat less of the hamburger than the rest of my family. Cause you know, delicate. 🙁

October 20, 2016 at 1:43pmWell, you preshus li’l thang! 😉 No, I hear ya. I have a very low pain threshold, and I am SO TIRED of being called a sissy because something hurts me that doesn’t hurt somebody else. BUT I HAD A CHILD THROUGH NATURAL CHILDBIRTH, SO TAKE THAT! LET’S SEE YOU DO THAT, COUSIN RONNIE! CAN’T DO IT, EH? OH, YOU CAN’T DO IT ‘CAUSE YOU’RE A BOY, EH? WAH, WAH, WAH!

October 20, 2016 at 3:23pmMad props to you for that. I consider “natural childbirth” to be anything short of having the infant yanked out through your ear canal, so, yeah – me, too. 9 lbs, 11 ozs and 9 lbs., 13 ozs. Natural ENOUGH. Let’s just say after a day on Pitocin, a needle in the spine starts to sound heavenly. Not so heavenly I couldn’t still feel little feet pushing hard against my ribs, stretching to breathe fresh air.
Yeah, this is not where I thought you were going with the HH post. I haven’t had that stuff in over 30 years. Never thought of serving it over rice, either. Good idea! Very unsure of that yellow blob. I don’t like “cheese sauce.” Especially the kind they pump atop movie house nachos. Blargh. MSG? The S is for sodium, so not a problem here! Woo hoo! (I sometimes think I should just put a salt lick in the back yard and admit I’m a deer.)
Do your ears pop when a tornado’s nearby? (Oh, no reason, just listening to the wind and trying to pop ’em back…)

October 20, 2016 at 3:25pmI meant “over lettuce,” up there.

October 21, 2016 at 8:33amMy ears haven’t popped since the last time I was in an airplane. Having sinusitis means the pressure inside will always be greater than the pressure outside.

October 30, 2016 at 4:15amCan you tell me how it tastes? It seems too weird to me. By the way, it might be the great suggestion to make a new trial.

October 30, 2016 at 11:52amIt tastes spicy and cheesy. We were surprised at how good it was. Very Tex-Mex-y, if that makes any sense.
