Find Your Addiction and Ferment It #FridayRecommends

Friday RecommendsFriday. Also my annual Black Friday PSA: It’s called Black Friday because accountants use black ink to register credits and red ink to register debits and businesses that have run in the red all year count on Christmas shopping — beginning on the Friday after Thanksgiving — to put them in the black. So now you know.

I’ll tell you something else you might not know. Louisville, Kentucky’s Hunter S. Thompson, inventor of gonzo journalism, controlled substance aficionado, and unwilling inspiration for Gary Trudeau’s Uncle Duke, was a wise man. Read his letter On Finding Your Purpose and see if you don’t agree.

While you’re there, spend some time at Tranquil Monkey. You could do worse.

The Australian site Buried Words and Bushwa is my kind of place. For one thing, the author is Addicted To History, as am I. I’m also addicted to cats, dogs, words, praise, fat, and craft beer. And too many authors to count.

I’m also addicted to kitchen gadgets, so curse, you, Facebook, for luring me to The Grommet with an ad for this Fermentation Pot by Mortier Pilon! I foresee much expenditure in my future. Alas for me!

A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: What is your main character addicted to? Or: Write about a character with an addiction.

Did not know about the Thompson-Uncle Duke connection. I may have to think about the fermentation thingie – thanks.

I’m thinking sauerkraut. I love it, but it’s too sharp and salty to suit Charlie. That’s because it probably isn’t fermented, but processed in brined vinegar.

My wife buys some local stuff that is fermented – no vinegar – and she really likes it, but they only do stuff that is in season and they only ship when the weather is agreeable. This might be an option.

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

Seems to me I’ve written about characters with obsessions. Is that close enough to addiction? Sadly, I’ve had to give up ALL my addictions (mostly carbohydrates) because they put weight on me so fast it’s scary.

May I recommend my favorite minor kitchen ‘appliance,’ The Crusher? It reduces a soda can (I only like Diet Coke in cans) to a tidy little hockey puck which takes practically no space in the recycling. Thank you, Middle Child.

Thanksgiving was delightful, thanks! Hope yours was the same or better. 🙂 Although a Thanksgiving without carbohydrates is like a day without starch. Oh, wait….

You certainly do write about characters with obsessions! Not sure if there’s a difference between obsession and addiction. I’d have to research that, and I’m just too darned lazy.

Ooo, I like that Crusher! I NEED ONE to crush Mom’s formula cans! ~pops off to the internet store~

And that, little ones, is called WORD OF MOUTH.

Tell ’em I sent you, the Crusher folk.

The darn thing works, and has crushed literally a thousand or more cans with no problems whatever. Just watch your fingers.

Do you have to mount it on the wall? ‘Cause I don’t want to mount anything on the wall or a table or a board or anything. What brand?

I can only speak about the one I use:

    https://www.amazon.com/Heavy-Contruction-Single-Aluminum-Crusher/dp/B000WZC6K0/

    There are other brands.

This one is mounted to the wall right next to the pantry (door frames have something very solid around them, perfect for anchoring the large-bore screws that keep it stable). It takes a fair amount of leverage to crush a can – very satisfying. Be sure to push the side in a bit to start the process.

If it isn’t solid and conveniently mounted, you won’t use it.

It has reduced the amount of storage we need for recycling.

Ah, thank you. I won’t use it, then. Saved me some money, right here! 😀
