Stupid Compass Tricks #Minecraft

I got killed by lava in my NEW Minecraft world. That always puts me off. So I went to a new one.

I’d never done a mesa world before, so I picked that seed. It was way different!

I really liked it, but there was a village just over there to the right. You know me and villagers, and one of them was wandering around outside the village, all over that beautiful landscape, going, “Eh. Ehhhh. Eh-ehh.” Make-a me nutz!

So I took off walking. And I walked, and I walked, and I walked. I passed this awesome mesa.

Just like the Badlands! And you know what? All those stripes of different colors are hardened clay of different stains! Usually, if you want stained clay, you have to find some soft underwater, chop it into lumps with your pick, use your crafting table to make blocks, fire it in your furnace to harden it, harvest flowers or cocoa beans or cactus and make dye, and dye the blocks. Here, you just dig it out with your pick, already hardened and stained. Wheeeee!

Oh, and those raggedy dead bushes all over the foreground and middle ground? I always wondered what was up with those. I found out:

You break them and they turn into sticks! Fabulous, if you don’t have any trees to turn into sticks! You need sticks to make fishing poles, bows and arrows, torches, ladders, and picks.

There’s red and yellow sand, too, as well as the usual white sand. Alas, it doesn’t make stained glass, just regular glass. Wouldn’t stained glass be amazing?

ANYWAY, I walked a long time, and I found the greatest place to settle.

It has a birch forest on one side, a river right by it, a bit of grass, and, across from the birch forest, this:

A JUNGLE!!! Those stripey things are watermelons. YUM.

And look what else? I never saw one before!

AN OCELOT! So I wandered around in some caves and collected enough diamonds to make a block and enough gold to make a buncha blocks but, most important, some string! Now I can fish for actual fish, to try to tame an ocelot and have a kitty in Minecraft at last!

Oh, about the compass. Youngest grandson never does anything with redstone, but I’m here to tell you, you need at least one piece of redstone and some iron bars so you can make a compass. The compass will always lead you back to the place you spawned: i.e., where you first appeared. If you die, you also respawn where you first appeared.

But I left where I first appeared and want to be in the place I found, near the jungle (because ocelot). Soo-oo-o, here’s the trick. At the top of your Pocket Edition screen, there’s a dialog balloon for entering into chat. But it also has another function. Go to where you want the compass to point, click on the balloon, then click on the bar where you type if you’re chatting. Type /setworldspawn and enter. Click Back.

Now your new spawn point is where you want to be, and your compass will guide you back there if you go ‘sploring.

Kewl!

I’m posting today at Fatal Foodies about a wee pizza.

Killed by lava? What a way to go. Your compass trick is kinda like my favorite GPS function “Go Home”

Yeah, I knocked a hole in a cave wall and lava came out. I tried to plug it, but sometimes the game seems to get miffed that I play peaceful and just HAS to kill me. I’m supposed to be protected by my iron armor, but the game decided that I wasn’t, this time. BOOM — Back to spawnpoint with no experience points and none of the stuff I had in my inventory when I “tried to swim in lava,” as the game puts it, with heavy-handed passive-aggressive pseudo humor.

Sorry about your death by lava incident. But a mesa, an ocelot, and a birch forest replete with watermelon — all sound promising.

It’s a great biome! So much fun! I have to shut the cat in now so I can explore without his falling into a pit or getting lavanated.

Have you constructed the layered mountain, or it was created by the game itself ?

The game created the layered mountain. Isn’t it great! I love the Mesa biome!
