Sometimes, the folks who use our weekly newspaper’s call-in service lose me along the way.
This lament, for instance. I understand what he or she is saying, but the thesis statement seems unconnected to the exposition, if I may be permitted to go all lit-jock on you, here.
Too Many Chiefs
by Anonymous Caller
Too many chiefs,
not enough Indians.
The Corydon JayC Store
has for ages
been my favorite grocery store.
But behold,
Kroger started a new program last fall.
To date,
they have trained
scores and scores of people
and it’s been like a revolving door.
You seldom see
the same person
twice.
The familiar faces
have gone….
Oh bring back my Jay C.

Sad, innit? But what does it have to do with “Too many chiefs, not enough Indians,” which means “Too many bosses, not enough workers”? Maybe I should call Live Wire and ask.
I’m posting at Fatal Foodies this week about a cheese quesadilla we had real quick-like.
A WRITING PROMPT BASED ON MY POST: Write about someone noticing the disappearance of familiar faces.

October 31, 2017 at 6:44pmThe callerr didn’t say it, but I bet a lot of those ‘new’ people are unsatisfactory in some way – instead of the old favorites who had been at the store forever (and probably not making that much more than when they starte).
That is me being horribly prejudiced – but something about the complaint rings of ‘you changed things which affected me and you don’t have the right to do that.’
I hope I’m wrong.

November 1, 2017 at 12:08pmWho can know the mind of an anonymous caller? All the new people I’ve dealt with have been pleasant and helpful. Of course, I don’t, as yet, rely on them to fill in any procedural or memory gaps for me (except for “The machine is waiting for your input” now and then). No matter how nice a new person is, it’s disconcerting, when you’re used to dealing with somebody who knew you when you were in your prime.

October 31, 2017 at 8:21pmHmm. I don’t know how I feel about this one. I miss the old Atlas grocery that was torn down and replaced with freakin WM Market. Atlas was a foodie place. Real food — butchers, bakers, not candlestick makers, but a nice cheese, spice, and imported selection… Took out our favorite Chinese place, too.
Maybe the chiefs suck and the Indians have run off for cowboys and greener pastures. I dunno.
