My New Best Pan

We got one of those copper-clad skillets, and it was almost everything they claim. Almost, but not. You know how they, like, use metal beaters in the pan and not a single scratch!? What a lie. Maybe I should have used a metal beater to flip my eggs instead of a spatula. Also: not non-stick forever. Maybe six months.

So Charlie says, “Don’t we have a cast-iron skillet in the basement somewhere?” We did, and he found it. It was a little rusty, but Mr. Internet is my friend. I found this way cool site called Apartment Therapy that told me how to clean it with Kosher salt and half a potato. It worked!

I’ve been working on seasoning it, and it’s already more non-stick than my fancy coppery thing.

So we’re happy, and all our ancestors are happy.

Speaking of ancestors, that there in the background is our walk-in pantry. Have I ever given you a tour of our walk-in pantry? My Aunt Anna had one when I was little, and it was the only thing about visiting the country I liked (at the time). I thought it was aMAZing, and, when Charlie built this house, I asked for one and got it.

Yay!

We had one of the green skillets like that. Same thing, it was non-stick the first few times we used it. Now, it just hangs on the wall.

Heavens, Yes! My MIL used to have a walk-in pantry, and coming from the house of no bad-for-you things, I believed her pantry was designed to get me fat and happy. I’d walk in there and hear the chorus of angels — Sugared cereal, cookies, snack cakes, pretzels, BUGLES (I’d never had Bugles!) — so much nom all in one place, like a party, like magic. LOL She doesn’t have one now. She has a stupid pantry like everyone else and there’s not much bad-for-you in it.

I LOVE MY CAST IRON SKILLETS. I love them. I’ve had phases with the non-stick and the coated and the special pans for $29.99 as seen on TV, but honest to goodness, I went back to cast iron and stainless steel and wonder why I ever left them to begin with! In fact, I’ve been thinking about writing a blog post about how we move forward, new innovations, and then we’re like nah, and go back. This seems to be a recurring theme in my own life.
Also, cast iron keeps my iron levels up to where the dr won’t nag me about eating more meat! Yaaasss!

Anyway, great post! I love your new best pan 😀

Yeah, I love love love my walk-in pantry. Mom has a cool pantry that has shelves that swivel out, but my walk-in is heaven to me. When I used to can, I had those shelves lined with home-canned beans and tomatoes and I was so happy!

I look forward to reading that blog post of yours. Sometimes the old ways are good ways. Sometimes not, but sometimes yes.

My wife is slowly reverting to her cast iron pans. When properly seasoned and used, they are wonderful…I’m told.
