Vikings Walking Funny Into Imagination #FridayRecommends

Friday RecommendsI love how the internet leads you from one treat to another. Sure, you could spend all day web-crawling, but I could do the same thing with books — and have done so — so don’t blame electronics for my lost production hours!

This time, it all started with Norm Frampton’s Thursday Doors post of September 28, about a Viking settlement in Newfoundland.

The same day, or thereabouts, somebody on Facebook posted a video about how people in the Middle Ages probably walked differently than we do, because they walked on different surfaces than most of us do and because they wore soft-soled footwear.

That video was on the blog of James Gurney, who blogs daily about art, writing, and stuff that interests him. Like this post about a Belle Epoque Apartment Untouched for 70 Years. Or this one, about a museum exhibit of imaginative art.

And then I read his sidebar introduction and I was like, “Wait a minute … OH! JAMES GURNEY!” He wrote and illustrated the brilliant DINOTOPIA books and does cover illustrations. Like for THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION and freakin’ Tim Powers and stuff! Here’s James Gurney’s official website. He’s awesome!

So spend a day or two (or more) with James Gurney. Think of it as a staycation in Wonderland.

A WRITING PROMPT FOR YOU: Write about somebody who walks differently but has a good but unexpected reason.

About

I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but now live in the woods in southern Indiana. Though I only write fiction, I love to read non-fiction. The more I learn about this world, the more fantastic I see it is.

I thought they walked differently because flip-flops hadn’t been invented.
