All About Mermaids #FridayRecommends

Some weeks, the information superhighway is more like a trail of breadcrumbs, and that was this week.

I can’t remember which came first, but I think it was an article about the Newfoundland & Labrador Beard & Moustache Club’s forthcoming calendar featuring its members in mertails. They’re raising money for an organization that fosters mental health through interaction with horses. Not, you know, like Equus, but in healthy ways.

If you want to be one of the pre-orderers, head over to the NL BMC website and sign up.

Speaking of odd but healthy, did you know that a lot of people find delight, comfort, and strength from “mermaiding”? Here’s an article about it which I liked very much. Some articles about mermaiding treat it as a silly thing. I imagine that some people slap on a tail and play goofy. Some people mermaid professionally, like the Weeki Wachi mermaids. But some people derive a deep satisfaction from it. I’m an evolutionist, me, and I believe we all came out of the sea, back in the day, so it makes perfect sense to me that people should feel at home in an environment no longer our home. Mermaiding is about beauty, grace, athleticism, creating one’s own body image outside of society’s commercialized version, and finding a community that supports you.

No, I don’t mermaid, and I don’t see myself doing it, but I get it. Guess that makes me a FOM: Friend Of Mermaids. There are worse things to be.

Yeah, I’ll prolly just stick with making Mermaid Toast and stuff. Except prolly not. Because lazy.

A WRITING PROMPT BASED ON MY POST: Write about mermaids of any kind.
