Crazy Russian Guards Tombstone #FridayRecommends

Friday RecommendsSo I went to the Derby City ComicCon last weekend. It was awesomesauce! Sold a lotta books, a lotta bookmarks, met a lotta nice folks, had a lotta fun.

I wore my Crazy Russian Hacker t-shirt, and had three people go, “I thought I was the only one who watched him!” That’s when you know you’ve nerded successfully: when some people know who you’re talking about, but not a lot of people do. If everybody knows, you’re mainstream. If nobody knows, you’re a goddamn smugass hipster. Me, I was just right. The next day, I wore my Original Enterprise schematic shirt, which was on the mainstream end of the spectrum, but that’s okay.

ANYWAY, if you haven’t seen the Crazy Russian Hacker, here’s a good episode:

I laahf heem. Hee’s so fwahny.

After the con, I spent the night with the amazing Sara Marian and her amazing partner, Zak. They showed me two movies they’ve been wanting to share, and I loved both selections.

One was GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2. I didn’t much like the first one, but I LOVED the second one! Not a dull moment, interesting character dynamics, lots of 80s Easter eggs to make me laugh in surprised recognition.

The other one was TOMBSTONE. Sara’s been quoting TOMBSTONE at me for-like-EVER, so I was glad to have context for the quotes. Really good movie, put the gunfight near the OK corral in its proper perspective as one of the many things that happened in and around Tombstone and in the participants’ lives. I had seen Western art featuring guys wielding guns, mounted on galloping horses (the guys, not the guns), sporting flowing red sashes (the guys, not the horses or the guns). Now I know those were cowboys.

I already knew that the cowboys were the bad guys, not the Ramrod Rowdy Yates guys who took the cows to the railhead — those were drovers. I knew this because I read this really good book called The Last Gunfight: The Real Story of the Shootout at the O.K. Corral–And How It Changed The American West by Jeff Guinn. Highly recommended.

A WRITING PROMPT BASED ON MY POST: Write about connecting with someone through something semi-obscure two or more people share an interest in.

Well, you know what they say about idle hands. Besides the harp music will be inspiring. And maybe some of the other stuff too. Who knows! Let me know if you enjoyed any.
