Pemmican Pete #StoryADayMay 8

I’m pressed for time today, so I’m attempting a what’s-its-name — a 100-word story — Oh, yeah, a drabble. The title doesn’t count. And it isn’t 100 words or fewer, it’s exactly 100 words.

Story A Day

Pemmican Pete

by Marian Allen

Life was hell.

When Canadian civilization collapsed, Pete thought, “No taxes!” Wrong. Money worthless? Pay in pemmican.

He was sick of it. Hunt deer. Gather berries. Process meat and fat. Dry meat and berries. Make pemmican.

Then young Steffi appeared at his hut in the heights of Montreal – evading something, he thought. Good hunter, good cook.

“Will they come here?” she asked now.

“The BNA Act says we have to take it down.”

“They don’t know where we live?”

“No.”

“So why take it?”

“Suppose they come looking?”

She hefted a heavy, pointed stone. “Suppose they do.”

Life was good.

I’d want her on my side.

It’s hard to imagine how bad/weird/dangerous things could get in the absence of a government, even a bad one.

You always want Steffi on your side. I see by my prompts that tomorrow is supposed to be a Steffi story. Stay tuned.

A few comments! Line by Line!

Life was hell. AN ALL TOO OFTEN EVENT!

When Canadian civilization collapsed, Pete thought, “No taxes!” Wrong. Money worthless? Pay in pemmican.

It has not yet, but is trying hard to. Steffie has to get mad at politicians. She can start here, and work her way up to the USA! LOL! NO icecream sundaes for them!

He was sick of it. Hunt deer. Gather berries. Process meat and fat. Dry meat and berries. Make pemmican.

Few deer left to hunt! I’d have to get a gun! I am dddooommmeeeddd!

Then young Steffi appeared at his hut in the heights of Montreal – evading something, he thought. Good hunter, good cook.

Steffie is always either chasing, evading, or arguing with Librarians.
What there is blood on the pages? Sorry.
There is a shotgun blast through the middle of the book? Reshelve it as a mystery then!
Of course, her books are made of paper…

“Will they come here?” she asked now.
    Who they?

“The BNA Act says we have to take it down.”

I do not recall the act talking about stuff like that. As for PET’s bringing home of the Constitution…
Do not get me started on that. I’ll bark like a dog! I do a very good bark. And a great rant!
    (I am very Conservative!)

“They don’t know where we live?”

That must be the Canuck Govt. They often get confused about that!

    “No.”
    Dr No? LOL!

    “So why take it?”

Take What? Where?? How? When? Why?
I just do not want Steffie getting me into trouble! I can do that on my OWN!

    “Suppose they come looking?”
    Who they?

She hefted a heavy, pointed stone. “Suppose they do.”

A good idea. And spears and crossbows are cool, too!

    Life was good.

    About time! LOL!

    Good story!

Pete has to pay his taxes in pemmican. The BNA Act stipulates that Pete has to take his taxes to Montreal to pay them. Steffie suggests they don’t, and see if anybody comes to fetch them. Glad you liked the story. 🙂
