Lost Bread is Naturally #Vegetarian

Lost Bread. Ha-ha, ain’t I funny, though? See perdu is French for lost and pain is French for bread, but pain perdu is the French name for what we call French Toast.

ANYWAY, Charlie asked for some and I made some. (Today is his birthday.)

Here’s how you make it, and then how I make it.

French Toast

  • butter or margarine
  • 1 egg for every 2 pieces of toast
  • milk
  • vanilla extract
  • slices of stale French bread
  • cinnamon

Melt margarine in a large skillet. Combine egg, milk, and vanilla and mix well. Dredge bread in this and put into buttered skillet. sprinkle with cinnamon. Cook, turning once, until cooked through and browned on both sides (maybe 5 minutes a side?).

Serve with maple syrup.

Mine

  • vegan margarine
  • egg
  • vanilla almond milk
  • whatever bread I have on hand
  • cinnamon

Blah, blah, blah, make it the same way, only I don’t use syrup: After I turn the slices, I sprinkle them–okay, I SMOTHER THEM–with powdered sugar.

i’m posting at Fatal Foodies today about a new potato soup recipe I tried, and the one we like better.

I like French Toast too, with fresh bread, and I insist on my Syrup and Cinnamon!

If this is Tuesday, have a Royal Fizzbin, and you got Toasted, not Spammed!
BUT… I eat French Toast WITH Spam.

Whenever I can afford it. Too much gets exported. It makes it expensive here.

But I like it. Despite that, I am diabetic and much always watch. And e4very so often my adopted brother in Sweden, Mikael, needs a can. In Sweden, buying Maple Syrup is a very expensive proposition, and done in a govt store, where they sell other things. And once in a while, a special lucky can, goes to Hawaii.

As well, I am not allowed to have it (WAY too much sugar), and it is pricey, Noella and I send her daughter a can of Mapo Spread.

Canada Post is ripping us off sideways on the shipping. Sigh.

If I had a more decent pension, I could do this more often. But on $680/mo, taxable, every buck counts.

            You do realize….

            This message from you….

            MEANS

            I have to try this.

            (Wish me luck.)

It might taste good on toast.

*Quibbles your French* I know lost is just as right in translation, but wasted is better translation, as stale bread makes the best pain perdu. People in this house would like theirs with fruit, chocolate chips, powdered sugar AND whip, because I live with animals! lol I like syrup, real syrup. Out and about they put the sugar on it, and I eat it, but I just like syrup. Mmhm, that sounds good. Maybe we have that Friday night. I think we shall. We shall. It’s been a hot minute.

Now, that potato soup? Ehhh, I’m CERTAIN your original soup is better. I like a corn, potato, ham chowder, but when I think of potato soup, well, that photo isn’t it.
