This is what I found on Friday, when I read the story.
Godfall
by Alexander Stanmyer
An unmanned probe goes through hyperspace to investigate the source of Dark Matter. It finds the bodies of gods. Ones we know about and ones lost to time. When the probe approaches one of the bodies, the probe goes dark and stops sending information.
Earth, being Earth, decides to send a manned (or personned) mission. And they find…. No, the probe has not become a god.
Wonderful short story with a novel’s worth of potential. I could easily and happily read a book or even a series with this premise, this narrative character, and this authorial voice.
Highly recommended.
