I may have shared this before, but it bears repeating.
At the time our youngest, the amazing Sara Marian, entered high school, she was a self-described semi-Goth. By that, she meant, among other things, that she had no tattoos or piercings, but she wore black, listened to Alternative music, and didn’t smile unless she damn well felt like smiling.
She was lucky in that there were several other people with her sensibilities, amazing, in a small-town school.
But you can’t always run with your protective herd when you have different classes.
So one day, a boy from the more general population stopped her in the hall and said, “You’re one of them freaks, aren’t you?”
To which she replied (and I may not remember the precise wording):
The term is “Alternative,” but you can say “freaks,” since “Alternative” has more than one syllable.
