Darmstadt 2 #ThursdayDoors

Here are some more pictures from Darmstadt, Germany, the city my grandfather’s great-grandfather came from. Leister is the family name, in case you were wondering.

#4 Daughter, the amazing Sara Marian, found all these pictures on WikiMedia.

Green roof, and some apartments have trees growing in them and out the windows.

I am ALL ABOUT that apartment building! If you had an apartment on the inner part, you could live in it AND look out the window and see it.

Thursday doors is the brainchild of Norm Frampton, photographer extraordinaire. Visit his site, enjoy his wonderful photographs, follow his directions, and enter a world of doors.

That apartment building is pretty crazy. I love the church too. Thanks for sharing.

These are great doors. Likely I’ll never see them up close, but…

Yeah, me either. But I’m sure enjoying them from a distance. 🙂

What a fascinating building, Marian. I followed the link and read about it. It makes me think of a concept I like–roofs with gardens or bee hives or such on them. Of course to have a green roof, you have to have plenty of support and more, but if you can do it, what a great thing.

I remember reading a picture book when I was wee, with a picture of a house with sod on the roof and a goat up there eating grass and flowers. I don’t know why that made such a strong impression on me, but it did.

Those orthodox churches sure know how to do ornate details. We have a few in town here that I should check out.
I’m not sure what to think about the apartment complex in terms of practicality but it does seem like a good idea in principle.

It’s been around for close to 20 years, so I guess it works. I think green roofs are brilliant!

I wish somebody would set up a VR tour of it. Then I, here, and #4 Daughter, at her house, could put on helmets and meet there. In my fantasy, the tour package comes with mail-order meals, and we could heat those up and “sit in a Darmstadt restaurant” or “at an outside cafe table” and eat our meals together. Then we could take our helmets off and sleep in our own beds.
