High School With Subtitles #MondayRecommends and #Nails

Another Netflix series I binged up is made and set in Ireland: Derry Girls. It’s set in LondonDerry during the Troubles.

The accents are so thick, I have to turn on subtitles, but it’s totally worth it. I almost stopped watching it when the kids accidentally did something destructive, but I stuck with it until I got the flavor: There are no serious consequences to anything the kids do. You get the occasional news report about the very serious consequences to things grownups do, but the kids are okay.

Emily Brennen, of The New York Times, says it all better than I could in her article, “Comfort Viewing: 3 Reasons I Love ‘Derry Girls'”.

Every subject, be it personal or political, is mined for irreverent comedy.

[But:]

The show’s got sustenance….

I’ll prolly watch it again.

My nails this week:

I’ve added Derry Girls to the list of things to check out, on your recommendation. We watched all the seasons of Orange is the New Black – and grew quite fond of the characters – because of the focus on the positives in life, even in terrible circumstances.

High school isn’t my thing, though – especially the American version – but we may watch a bit to see if there is something universal. We’re watching Cardinal right now, which has way too much of the serial killer fascination some series develop, but I like the characters of the detectives enough to stand the rest, though I’ve authorized the husband with the control to fast-forward past the unnecessarily gory parts. We’ve watched several series that way.

I’m sorry I wasn’t clear. My bad! Derry Girls is set in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, not in America. 🙂

I know. That’s even worse, as I don’t like most historical stuff. But high school in general is not my favorite, and high school historical may or may not be.

You were perfectly clear, though my comment wasn’t.

It looks like she does hers freehand, and I use nail stamping, so she’s got me beat by a country mile! 😀 Thanks for the link. I watch freehand nail art to relax.
