I said last week that I would soon be reduced to taking pictures of my oven door, and that time has come.
We paid extra for this stove because it has a see-through door. Since I love to bake, I need a see-through door, so I can keep an eye on my pastries and shit without letting the heat out.
#1 Daughter gave us that perty flowerdy dish towel.
Okay, without the towels.
And open.
Got a baking stone in there because I was going to bake naan last night, but decided to cook ’em in the cast iron skillet instead. I baked bread on it the other day.
Better doors next week. Maybe.

November 5, 2020 at 10:19amInnovative idea for βdoorβ. An everyday boring entity but a lifesaver of families

November 5, 2020 at 10:44amI was threatening to do a similar post as my archives of doors are running a bit thin. Nicely done.

November 5, 2020 at 10:52amWell, thankee! We do what we must to keep the honor of our band intact.

November 5, 2020 at 11:51amNicely done indeed. It’s probably because I’ve always had ovens with window doors that I never thought about this issue before…and I bake…a LOT! You’re absolutely right though, you gotta see what’s going on in there.
Marian Allen
November 5, 2020 at 3:45pmAbsolutely! You have to cook cream puffs until there’s no speck of moisture on them. How are you supposed to do that with a solid door? Unless, you know, you have x-ray vision.

November 5, 2020 at 6:25pmOpening those doors, seems like food happiness to me, Marian!

November 6, 2020 at 7:35amI agree, Teresa! I roasted some raw almonds yesterday, and made myself and the kids happy. π

November 5, 2020 at 8:53pmI’ve been baking lately too, but I’m not so experienced. My dough seems to be pretty dense. I always thought it was because it included whole wheat flower. But, could it be I’ve just not kneaded it enough? Asking for a friend….
Marian Allen
November 6, 2020 at 7:38amYeah, whole wheat flour makes a dense loaf. I would either substitute bread flour for up to half of the whole wheat, and/or let it rise more (it should double on each rise), or try using more yeast. But if you’re following a recipe, all that should be taken into account. So maybe you SHOULD just knead it for about 10 minutes, until it’s smooth and elastic and you can stretch it without it breaking until you can stretch it so thin you can see light through it.
kirizar
November 6, 2020 at 8:48pmI think that might be the problem. I never set the timer and just knead until I’m tired. So, probably I need to knead more. (There are so many ways that is applicable, but I won’t count them now.)
Marian Allen
November 7, 2020 at 9:53amLOL! Have you ever watched The Great British Baking Show? You can probably find videos of bits of it on YouTube. Or look up Paul Hollywood videos. He’s the bread guy. Watching him knead is like watching a good DJ or good modern dance using only hands and upper body.

November 16, 2020 at 9:47pmI’m more a fan of Marian Berry. She looks like a woman who could pit your cherries at ten paces and serve you up with tea and crumpets without batting an eye.
It is entirely possible I am watching The Great British Bake-Off for all the wrong reasons. Has American television corrupted me so much that I would soil the genteel sport of fine baking by turning it into a gunfight at the OK corral? It is entirely possible.
Side note: I’ve been re-watching season 5–I think–and they just finished the Tart category. Man did I want to throw together a tart–but life and time preclude getting fancy with my baked goods right now. But next week–no school. There will be pie at the very least!
Happiest of November-based Holiday–Diwali to Thanksgiving–celebrate it like you mean it!

November 17, 2020 at 10:07amThanks for the good wishes, and more of the same to you!
I loved Mary Berry! Have you watched the Baking Show Masterclass? Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry cooking the challenge dishes. It’s so charming and funny! I do like Prue Leith, though; she’s posh, but kind of two-fisted posh. What Sara and I like about the Baking Show is how the bakers look out for each other, even though they’re in competition. So sweet!

November 17, 2020 at 3:43pmI’ve not heard of Prue Leith before. I’ll keep an eye out for her. And we don’t seem to have the Baking Show Masterclass through our PBS station. I’ll see if I can find it somewhere. Thanks.
And yes, a friendly competition is definitely more my cup of tea!

November 17, 2020 at 3:57pmPrue Leith took Mary Berry’s place a season or two ago. They have new presenters, too. I think they switched networks? Anyway, Sara and I watch on Netflix.

November 17, 2020 at 3:59pmOne more reason to get Netflix. Sigh. I really want to, but I have to get through the seasons of shows on CBS.AllAccess first. Don’t tell me how it turns out. I’ll check out the shows perhaps this Christmas I’ll break down and get a subscription!

November 18, 2020 at 9:09amThere’s also The Great British Baking Show Holidays, where fan-favorite cooks — not necessarily winners — compete to make holiday treats.

November 7, 2020 at 10:45amI recently cleaned it. #4 Daughter cooked a pot roast and the gravy runneth over. lol
