CoryDoors – Old Times #ThursdayDoors

I had to stop at the drug store for tax-related printouts, so I took the opportunity to snap some pictures of things that were.

This is a ghost garage door attached to Lisa’s Sports Bar and Grill, where Mom and I used to go for lunch sometimes. They had a back room which we usually had to ourselves. Great home cookin’. Country fried steak, ribs and kraut, fish sammiches…. Maybe they still do, I don’t know.

This one has undergone a real sea change. It’s a church now, but it used to be The Silver Dollar. One of the first pieces of local news I remember hearing after we moved here was about a man who got into a bar fight there; he was beaten, shot, stabbed, and found in the creek across the road. As far as I know, he was not named Rasputin.

Lest you think all I know about is bars, this building used to house a small appliance repair shop that sold these new-fangled things called LaserDiscs. They were pre-VHS, pre-Beta CDs, about the size of an LP (assuming you remember vinyl LPs). Yeah, we had a player. Cutting edge, baby! BTW, they can still be bought on Etsy and eBay. Although it isn’t a bar, it is the first and only place I saw the title Debbie Does Dallas.

This place is still what it was. This is where I used to buy feed for the chickens. The feed store is still here, but our chickens have joined the choir invisible.

Thursday doors is under the direction of Dan Antion, photographer extraordinaire and critter daddy. Visit his site, enjoy his wonderful photographs, follow his directions, and enter a world of doors.

And here is the newly-minted Thursday Doors badge. Ain’t it a pip?

These are wonderful doors, Marian. Laser Discs, I remember them, but fortunately it was a technology that we could not afford at the time. It’s OK, I have plenty of VHS tapes. It’s interesting how building’s occupants change over time, but some of us remember the original occupants.

    Chickens, you say?

The laserdiscs must have been phasing out, or I doubt we would have had the player or any discs. I know the place had more VHS tapes than discs, and the discs were cheap.

In Corydon, as in many places, directions include stuff like, “Go up the hill past where the old JayC used to be….”

Chickens. We have had chickens. Eggs until they stopped laying, then we ran a chicken retirement home for a few years until the old gals passed.

The post I was honored by WordPress for was one about directions. It includes my father’s best line ever – “…and keep going until you get to where old-man Bedner’s barn used to be, then turn left” – I love places and people like that.

Wow, that church sure has quite a history. I still have my old vinyls from the seventies but the player is long gone, so I bought one recently and realized just how much I missed that old ‘crackly’ sound, lol.

I know, right? That “crackly” sounds used to mean music was coming. 🙂

LOL! You’re funny! Many decades ago now I worked for a company as a buyer that made digital locks for the information on Floppy Discs, but I never had a Laser Disc. I missed that trend. I still have some of my LP’s and my Mom may have some of my 45’s at her place, but I haven’t got a record player anymore.

Great doors, and stories this week, Marian! 😀

We have a closet under the stairs (no little boy in there) full of LPs. We have a record player, too. 🙂

I like the ghost door, Marian. My dad grew up in the country, so there were similar directions given there. Also using directions rather than right and left were used. My husband just doesn’t get that. 🙂

I know! But I’d rather do right and left than compass points. “North? Go North? Do I look like White Fang to you?”

We work better with right and left, too, Marian. 🙂 I’m pretty sure White Fang went by food or not food, people or not people, etc. 🙂

Oh, I know all about the sled dogs! Charlie woke me up one night, saying I was whining. I wasn’t whining in my dream; I was howling, for I was the lead sled dog, and I was ready to run! True story. Why, yes, I had been binge reading Jack London. How did you know?

It’s interesting how the buildings have been re-purposed e.g. from the Silver Dollar to a church. #ThursdayDoors

There’s a lot of re-purposing in Corydon: a bank into a library, a jail into a history museum, a printing facility into a wine shop. I love it!

That’s a great collection. It is perhaps a rule that half of American small towns must have a Silver Dollar.

We don’t have a Silver Dollar anymore, alas! We have three flavors of Dollar Stores, but that just ain’t the same….
